These buttery, melt-in-your-mouth sugar cookies get a magical Christmas twist — literally! Two colorful doughs braided together into soft, chewy holiday spirals. They’re easy, fun, and guaranteed to disappear fast from any cookie tray!
π ingredients:
• 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 1 large egg
• 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
• 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• Red gel food coloring
• Green gel food coloring
• Optional: holiday sprinkles or sanding sugar for rolling
π₯£ directions:
make the dough
In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Mix in the egg and vanilla until smooth.
In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Add dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix until a soft dough forms.
color & chill
Divide the dough into three equal portions. Leave one plain, color one red, and color the last one green.
Wrap each dough separately and chill for 30–45 minutes so it firms up and rolls easily.
shape the twists
Pinch off a small piece of each color. Roll each piece into a thin rope about 6 inches long.
Place the three ropes side-by-side, gently press the tops together, then twist them into a candy-cane-style swirl.
Shape into straight logs or curved cookie shapes.
Optional: roll in sugar or sprinkles for sparkle.
bake
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Place cookies on a parchment-lined sheet, leaving space between them.
Bake 9–11 minutes, just until the bottoms look lightly golden. Don’t overbake — they stay soft!
cool & serve
Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a rack. Enjoy warm or fully cooled.
