15-Minute Hawaiian Roll Grilled Cheese

These mini sandwiches are the perfect balance of sweet, salty, and buttery. By keeping the rolls connected and toasting them as a "slab," you save time and ensure even browning.

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 10 minutes

Total time: 15 minutes

Yields: 12 mini sliders

Ingredients

The Base

1 pack (12 count) King’s Hawaiian Original Sweet Rolls

6-8 slices of cheese (Cheddar, American, or Havarti work best for melting)

4 tbsp Unsalted butter, softened (or Mayonnaise for an extra-crispy crust)

The Flavor Boost (Optional)

½ tsp Garlic powder

½ tsp Dried parsley or Italian seasoning

1 tbsp Honey (for a "Hot Honey" finish)

Instructions

1. The "Big Slice" (Minutes 0-3)

Do not pull the rolls apart! Use a long serrated knife to slice the entire block of 12 rolls in half horizontally. You should have one large "bottom slab" and one "top slab."

2. Prep the Spread (Minutes 3-5)

In a small bowl, mix your softened butter with the garlic powder and herbs.

Pro Tip: Spread the butter on the inside faces of the rolls first, then place them butter-side down on a cold skillet.

3. Layer the Cheese (Minutes 5-7)

Place the bottom slab into a large non-stick skillet over medium-low heat. Immediately layer your cheese slices across the bread. If using square slices, overlap them slightly so every inch of bread is covered. Place the top slab on.

4. The Press and Toast (Minutes 7-12)

The Press: Use a heavy spatula (or another pan) to press down firmly on the rolls. This creates the "panini effect," ensuring the cheese melts before the bottom burns.

The Flip: Once the bottom is golden brown (usually 3-4 minutes), carefully slide a large spatula under the block and flip the entire slab.

The Finish: Toast the other side for another 2-3 minutes. If the cheese isn't fully melted yet, cover the pan with a lid for 60 seconds to trap the steam.

5. Slice and Serve (Minutes 12-15)

Slide the slab onto a cutting board. Use your serrated knife to cut along the original lines of the rolls. Serve immediately while the cheese is gooey.

Chef's Tips for Success

Watch the Heat: Hawaiian rolls have a high sugar content. If your stove is too hot, they will turn from golden to burnt in seconds. Stick to medium-low.

The "Inside-Out" Trick: For maximum crunch, some chefs flip the rolls inside out so the fluffy interior becomes the crispy exterior.

Dipping: These are specifically designed for dipping into a hot bowl of tomato soup or a side of ranch.
