Bacon, Mushroom, and Egg Mille-feuille Tart with Gruyère Cheese
This bacon, mushroom, and egg mille-feuille tart looks intricate and complex, but it's actually quite simple to make, making it perfect for entertaining guests. Using ready-made puff pastry, layered with layers of Gruyère cheese hidden beneath a delicious filling, it's an unforgettable experience!
Ingredients:
Puff pastry: 1 sheet (frozen puff pastry can be used)
Gruyère cheese: as needed, grated
Eggs: 3
Egg yolk: 1
Mustard: 1 teaspoon
Bacon: 3-4 slices, chopped
Mushrooms: 100g, sliced
Salt: to taste
Black pepper: to taste
Butter: a little, for sautéing
Instructions:
Prepare the cheese mixture:
In a small bowl, combine 1 egg yolk, mustard, and grated Gruyère cheese until well combined.
Prepare the puff pastry:
Lay the puff pastry on a baking sheet and prick it with a fork to prevent it from puffing up during baking.
Spread the cheese mixture evenly over the puff pastry, leaving a 1 cm border unspread.
Pre-bake the puff pastry: Place the baking tray in a preheated oven at 200°C (390°F) and bake for about 10 minutes, until the puff pastry begins to puff up and the cheese mixture starts to bubble.
Prepare the filling: Heat a little butter in a skillet and add the chopped bacon. Fry until golden brown and crispy.
Add the sliced mushrooms and sauté until softened and the moisture evaporates.
Season with salt and black pepper, then remove and set aside.
Assemble and bake: Spread the sautéed bacon and mushroom filling evenly over the pre-baked puff pastry.
Crack 3 eggs onto the filling, being careful to keep the yolks intact.
Return the baking tray to the oven and continue baking for about 10-15 minutes, until the eggs are set and the puff pastry is golden brown.
Serve: Remove the baked bacon, mushroom, and egg puff pastry tart from the oven and let it cool slightly for a few minutes.
Cut into pieces and serve. Tips:
Using ready-made frozen puff pastry saves a lot of time while ensuring a crispy texture.
The cheese mixture not only adds flavor but also acts as a binder, allowing the filling to adhere better to the pastry.
When sautéing the filling, adjust the amount of salt and black pepper to your taste.
While baking, keep an eye on the egg's set to avoid over-drying and affecting the texture.
This bacon, mushroom, and egg puff pastry tart is perfect for breakfast, brunch, or afternoon tea, enjoyed with a cup of coffee or tea.
