Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour (you can substitute some with whole wheat flour)
- 1 cup warm water (about 110F/43C)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 packet (2 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
Directions:
1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over it and allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes, until it becomes frothy.
2. Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, mix the flour and salt together. Pour in the yeast mixture and the olive oil or melted butter. Stir well until a cohesive dough forms.
3. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
4. Let the Dough Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl. Cover it with a clean towel and let it rise in a warm spot for 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
5. Shape the Dough: After the dough has risen, punch it down to remove excess air. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it into a greased loaf pan. Cover it again and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes, until it appears puffed.
6. Bake the Bread: Preheat your oven to 375F (190C). Bake the loaf for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped.
7. Cool and Serve: Once baked, let the bread cool in the pan for a few minutes. Then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.
